You are in for some very pleasant surprises with this excellent choice of bikes - don't be too quick to plan on moving on to a Sportster -
I am 6'4" and my stock 89 fits me perfectly!
As for the spacer and mods - this bike as you are becoming aware from this forum has been very little changed by the factory over the years. Chances are that your machine has the plastic spacer et al still in place. Don't be in a rush to take it out - depending upon your riding style- if you do lots of highway miles the backfiring problem disappears because all the carbon is burned out and the carb mod adds very little. The Supertrapp does require some monkeying with the air screw - involving drilling out the brass plug on the carb.
You bought a great bike and paid a terrific price. Ride and enjoy it - as is or with the mods - the Savage is a magnificent peice of engineering.
Keep the rubber side down
